Wood Energy Recyclers
Bringing value to “wood residue*” by organizing companies, landowners, non-profit organizations, and local, state, and federal government agencies that produce this neglected resource to work together to develop higher-value markets.
Current Situation
Millions of tons of clean wood residue are produced annually from economic and environmental activity. Since it is produced across so many sectors of our economy, which normally don’t work together, neither the volume of wood nor the opportunity it offers in aggregate is fully understood. As a result, the resource is often categorized as a “waste” and its carbon content and financial value is therefore wasted.
Strategy For Change
No higher value markets will develop for this resource until all sources of this resource are visible and its current value is known. Since the blend of wood residue supply sources is location-specific, a grassroots inventory across all the economic sectors mentioned above is required. This inventory will aggregate all sources of wood residue to develop market confidence in the annual supply. Wood Energy Recyclers is asking for your support in developing this economy-wide inventory.
Want to bring value to wood residue?
Join a Coalition of Wood Residue Producers asking state governments to inventory all wood residue generated annually within each state and determine its current value.
Send Wood Energy Recyclers (WER) your contact information and join others supporting better use of wood residue. We will connect you with others in your area interested in aggregating this homogenous resource. Even if you do not support community-scale heating, which Wood Energy Recyclers advocates, aggregating this available wood residue is essential to developing all markets around a dependable supply.
*We define “wood residue” as:
- clean cut wood which cannot, or will not, be made into a carbon-sequestering product
- cannot, or should not, be left in place.
